Adding to the selectively dangerous villain: when the monster that has been slashing through anyone it's come across finally is confronted by the main character and, instead of slashing through them, the monster picks them up and throws or backslaps them across the room, which of course doesn't incapacitate or seriously injure the main character at all.

A line that needs to be mentioned here is from The Great Muppet Caper. Lady Holiday, played bi Diana Rigg, has just finished giving a long and entirely uncalled for history on her brother's character. Miss Piggy asks "Why are you telling me this?" And Lady Holiday replies " It's plot exposition, it has to go somewhere." I cannot tell you how many times I've been watching some other movie and the bad dialog has made that line come to mind.

Title pages, when to use a quote before the start of the book, how to add symbols or icons between sections of a chapter (In Bad Parts, you used dashes to separate scenes), chapters with names vs. numbers, when to use italics or all caps, is it ok to switch fonts for any reason, how long should a novel be, how many words per page, etc.

I think having them both run away straight from the alien ship was the mistake because at least one of the two strong characters would have made the rational decision to run to the left or right in a time of panic. But doing something stupid when you are panicked is actually a common thing. It would have been entirely plausible in that situation with some people to have them literally frozen and unable to move in panic.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Wayne explains to a group of scientists that his machine operates on a principle that if you shrink the space between molecules, you could shrink the object. If that is so, then the kids that are shrunk down should be incredibly dense and heavy, perhaps almost like cement. And in the sequel, his iid, when enlarged, should be like a balloon. One little poke and this iid is gone.

I am wanting to write a journal entry story of a group of friends surviving an attack of a monster. I've written one person's story but I do not want to write out 4 more of the same story with different opinions. Would it be best if I interjected chapters with the others entrees with cut downs? Or would it be best to keep the one and then let another friend take on the next story of them slowly turning into monsters?

Hate the movie all you want for any number of reasons, but Terminator: Rise of the Machines to me was one of the best and unexpected "holy sh*t" endings. SPOILER: To go from trying to stop the world from exploding by blowing up Skynet's Core to finding out the Terminator's mission wasn't to stop it, but to get them to survive it, to get in the bomb shelter before the bombs go off, and the hook that he's now the resistance leader as always foretold...and the sad music with the explosions going off-- that was fantastic.

Gotta disagree with the training day example. Im not even sure its a twist per se in that the movie usbt reying to trick you. its just the theme/message of the movie. Morality will prevail in the end. What comes around goes around. You reap what you sow. Having Jake save himself would undermine the whole point of the movie

I'm going to have to defend The Hills Have Eyes. There really isn't much time to come up with a clever solution here. By the time another solution might be found that baby is gone. It's clear those mutants aren't going to listen to reason, and considering what just happened with the dad, she has to do something drastic to save the baby even if it might hurt the baby because the alternative is far worse.

One of my favorite monologues comes from Babylon 5. Now there's many good monologues in Babylon 5 but my favorite actually comes from one of the side characters Milo Virini: "I have been many things in my life, Mollari. I have been silly. I have been quiet when I should have spoken. I have been foolish, and I have wasted far too much time. But I am still Centauri, and I am not afraid." I like it so much because it comes from a very minor character, who has always been viewed as a joke amongst the other characters and not taken seriously, but then comes the moments where he is about to die. I like it because it gives a great deal of insight into him without also over explaining things. It shows that even a character who can seem like a joke to others can have a great deal of self awareness, shame for their actions and bravery.

I thought the John Wick cliche was that no matter who it is, there has to be a final fight with the boss that lasts at least several rounds. Here's John Wick kills 10 guys with a pencil, destroys henchman with a swing, kills the boogie man. There is no reference that Viggo Tarasov was some expert fighter - he's just a slightly overweight ageing mob boss - yet he survives several rounds with John Wick and even injuring him in the process. Same with even John Preston in the Equilibirum. I loved that Christian Bale's character dispatched the henchman with one quick sword stroke - subverting expectations, but then he still had to have some extended gun kata with the final boss.

Draft Day is one of those bad but good movies. Overall I like the movie, but the script is atrociously simplistic. Someone in the writing room, whether they were pressed to revise the scripts by the higher ups or if they wrote it themselves, wrote a football movie for an audience that doesn't know football in an attempt to appeal to everyone, not just football fans. They kept explaining basic football terminology as if the audience doesn't know. Prime example: Coach Wheeler and the Browns are on the clock, which is nearly expired. We see Sonny pick up the phone, and the Cleveland exec at the draft says over the phone: "okay it's go time boss. Yeah yeah okay, what name do you want the commissioner to say?" Not "Okay Sonny, who's our pick?" It was a stupid line that I'm guessing no team exec at the draft has ever said. It spoon-fed the audience because, hey, now we know the commissioner is gonna say this name. Oh, and Sonny is his boss. There is plenty of spoon-fed eye-rolling dialogue throughout this film that makes you want to puke. But somehow it's still a good movie that every April, I have to watch.

I disagree with The Force Awakens. Kylo is *trying* to be Vader-like, but everyone knows he's just Ben, led astray, trying to be a tough guy. So undermining him and his authoritative act IS the purpose of the humor added to the serious scene. It's to say this guy isn't as tough as you'd think. And we get Kylo's struggle to be taken seriously throughout the entire film. In fact Kylo gets his revenge a short while later when he extracts the info he needs from Po through torture and Po can't joke his way out of that scenario. IMHO it was well placed humor. But I absolutely agree with the Rose/Finn interaction. I kept thinking "is the Empire just watching their interaction up close? I mean they're right there". Extremely forced. The only way this scene could have been saved is if an Imperial Walker stepped on Rose's pod with her in it.

Funnily enough the worst scene I've seen is also the last example in your video. The fact that the scene plays out with rose crashing into Finn when their chemistry is so flimsy just feels underhanded. And as well their kiss is accompanied by the exploding rebel base behind them creating a really confusing tone. AND THEN after the scene comes concludes are we supposed to believe that rose just carried Finn back to the rebel base through the no man's land directly in front of the first order fleet? No scene has ever struck me like that one, utterly baffling. Also fantastic video very in depth lol.

Oh I have the perfect haunted house story that changes the cliche. A girl comes to her own house which she's lived in all her life and through supernatural causes, it transforms into a massive haunted house with a ghost family who believe the house is theirs, and it kinda is because of an epic twist. That's all I'll spoil for now.
